Cáér Alaol
Syed Alaol is one of the most important literary figures
connected to the earlier history of Arakan. His life and works reflect the
cultural environment of Arakan during the 17th century.
Alaol arrived in Arakan after being captured at sea by
Portuguese pirates. In Arakan, he gained recognition for his literary and
scholarly abilities and became associated with Muslim ministers serving the
Arakanese court. Under their patronage, he translated and adapted major Persian
romances into literary verse.
His writings provide evidence of the multilingual and
multicultural character of the Arakan court. Historical records also show that
Muslim officials played important roles in administration, diplomacy, and
literary patronage during this period.
Works such as Padmavati and Saifulmuluk Badiuzzamal were
produced in this Arakanese courtly environment. Because of this, Alaol is
regarded as an important literary figure associated with the cultural history
of Arakan.
